Connecting GIS and BIM: Integration of the Official Cartographic Databases of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona into BIM

Since March 2023, territorial BIM models in IFC format have been available on the Barcelona Metropolitan Area’s Cartography Geoportal. Based on the 1:1,000 scale Metropolitan Topographic Map (MTM-1M), they encourage BIM professionals to integrate accurate 3D territorial data into projects. Covering 636 km² across 36 municipalities, they ensure territorial continuity and bring official cartographic precision into BIM. Developed in IFC 2×3 for ease of use, an IFC4x3 version is in progress to improve schema fidelity and compatibility. The Cartographic Projects and Innovation Department uses FME-based automation to connect GIS and BIM, enabling continuous process refinement, reduced production times, and better service for the AECO sector.
